Part of Glenfiddich’s Experimental Series comes a single malt which was finished for three months in casks which previously held IPA! Created collaboratively by Glenfiddich Malt Master Brian Kinsman and IPA expert Seb Jones, the IPA which was in the casks before the whisky was specially brewed for this expression by the Speyside Craft Brewery. Bound to be a fascinating whisky for whisky and beer enthusiasts alike (and the cross-over of that Venn diagram, too).
The second release in Glenfiddich’s Experimental Series is their Project XX expression, which was made not simply by one Malt Master, but 20! 20 Malt Masters were invited to the Glenfiddich distillery and invited them to pick any expression from the thousands of casks maturing in the warehouse. The 20 chosen whiskies were then married by Malt Master Brian Kinsman to create this single malt you see before your eyes. Hooray for teamwork!
Another release from the Glenfiddich Experimental Series – the Winter Storm has been finished in icewine casks, inspired by Malt Master Brian Kinsman’s visit to the Peller Estates winery in Canada. After 21 years of maturation (Kinsman believes that only older whiskies can stand up to the intense icewine notes), the Glenfiddich single malt is allowed a finishing period in icewine casks for up to six months before bottling.
Let the great experiment… Continue! Glenfiddich has added a new expression to its Experimental Series, unveiling Fire & Cane in mid-2018. Malt master Brian Kinsman has given some of the distillery’s peated single malt a three-month finishing period in rum casks – but not just any old rum casks. He’s selected rum casks from a variety of South American countries to finish this whisky, which ought to play nicely with the burly peat notes at its core.
Nose: An elegant harmony of fresh green apple, William’s pear and spring blossom. Complimented with Aromatic hops and fresh herbs.
Palate: Vibrant with a zesty citrus note followed by creamy vanilla and a hint of fresh hops.
Finish: Enduring sweetness with an echo of green hops.
Nose: This smells like a bit of a beastie, lots of woody spicy notes, toffee and orange peel. Clearly some serious cask action going on here.
Palate: Lots of wood: cloves, cinnamon and vanilla with tingly wood tannins, all wrapped up with some sweet fudge notes.
Finish: Long and layered, with lingering notes of espresso and dark chocolate.
Nose: A bouquet of tropical fruit and candied sweets are perfectly balanced with underlying wine notes.
Palate: Soft sweet notes reminiscent of candied fruit and Turkish delight develop into flavours of mouthwatering lychee. The fusion of sweet flavours is soon met with a rich drying sensation from the icewine.
Finish: Short and crisp.
Nose: Billowing soft peat notes, like distant smoke on the wind. Rich sweet toffee with zesty fresh fruit notes and spiciness.
Palate: Like a Highland peat campfire, with oak notes and toffee. Sharp green fruit, sweet baked apple and soft smoke.
Finish: Lingering smokiness and sweetness.
