A limited edition second release of 10 year old Octomore single malt Scotch whisky from Islay’s Bruichladdich distillery. The name of the game here is peat – all of the Octomore whiskies are super heavily peated, and this one is no exception. The barley was peated to a massive 167 ppm, and the spirit was matured in casks that previously held bourbon and casks the previously held Grenache Blanc wine. 18,000 bottles were produced.
Nose: Masses of smoky, earthy peat. Deft wafts of sweet citrus peels and chocolate come along a little bit later.
Palate: Boom – a big kick of maritime smoke arrives first and continues all the way through. Slight peppery warmth and a touch of honeydew melon.
Finish: Long and vegetal, with a hint of buttered brown bread.
