Laphroaig Quarter Cask
Released in 2004, this bottling was aged for around five years before being finished in a quarter cask for several months, the size of the cask is quite small, thus does not require such a long maturation. This remains a truly great achievement from Laphroaig.
A vibrant young Laphroaig whose maturation has been speeded up by ageing in quarter casks. This shows soft sweetness and a velvety feel when first tasted, then the intense peatiness so unique to Laphroaig comes bursting through. A terrific whisky and great value.
Region: Islay
Aroma: This opens on big, smoky muscular peat notes. There are spices, and liquorice, as well as a big dose of salt.
Flavours: The oak is big, and muscles its way into the fore as you hold this whisky over your tongue. An upsurge of spices develop – cardamom/black pepper.
Character: Big and drying, tarry notes build up with an iodine complexity.
