Compass Box Celestial – The Extinct Blends Quartet Whisky
Celestial is the fourth and last release in Compass Box’s Extinct Blends Quartet, a range of whiskies created to recapture the character of past releases through new blends.
The inspiration for Celestial is a blended scotch produced in the 1950s and 1960s that Compass Box got a bottle of, who don’t reveal the name but do confirm that it was created by one of the original ‘Whisky Barons’ (early Scotch pioneers like Tommy Dewar and James Buchanan). Key components of the blend are said to come from an Islay distillery and a Speyside distillery and Compass Box describes it as having “[a] ghostly peat note, abundant cask sweetness verging on gingerbread and stem ginger in syrup, and a floral fruitiness.”
A tribute to this great lost whisky, Celestial is the peatiest expression in the Extinct Blends Series and features whisky from Islay distilleries Ardbeg and Caol Ila, two parcels previously brought together six years ago for the original No Name. It was bottled at 50% ABV, non-chill-filtered and with its natural colour.

Heavyweight peat smoke. Behind that is a gingery richness, notes of vanilla and grilled apples. The palate is dry and oak-forward, with meaty smokiness flowing onto cooked tropical fruits.
