For the Laphroaig Select, the Islay distillery has taken whisky from a number of different types of cask, including Oloroso Sherry butts, white American oak, Pedro Ximenez seasoned hoggies, Quarter casks and first fill bourbon casks. Quite a “selection”, wouldn’t you say? A laid-back addition to the Laphroaig core range of single malts.
Laphroaig Select is aged in a combination of Oloroso sherry butts, American white oak (we suspect some of this is virgin oak), hogsheads seasoned with Pedro Ximenez, quarter casks and first fill bourbon casks. This results in a restrained and toned down version of this Islay classic.
Honey, malt, caramel and a noticeably more delicate peat than is traditionally in a glass of Laphroaig.
Malt, vanilla, honey and wood are close behind with some orchard fruit bringing up the rear.
A good balance of light flavors and aromas that pair well with the medium body and relaxed texture.
